Smoking (Nicotine Addiction)
Smoking (Nicotine Addiction)
The addiction to cigarettes has been compared to the dependency of cocaine and heroin. Over the years there have been many stop smoking programs with varied results. Most of these programs, including the "gum" and the "patch", have been drug (nicotine) based. Common sense dictates that replacing an addictive substance with another addictive substance is not an effective form of treatment.
How effective is Low Level Laser Therapy to Quit Smoking?
Laser Therapy averages over a 90% success rate. Results are exceptionally high compared to alternative methods such as the nicotine patch, nicotine gum, antidepressant drugs, and hypnosis etc.
How Does It Work?
Physical nicotine addiction is based in the brain. The nicotine rush or "hit" received from smoking is amplified by the presence of ammonia in cigarettes. This surge of nicotine releases endorphins that satisfy you temporarily. Typically after 20 minutes the levels drop substantially causing you to "crave" more nicotine. At this point a smoker will start to feel physical stress and aggitation, and the desire to have the endorphin levels restored (cravings).
A laser therapy treatment stimulates the body to release natural chemicals called endorphins that saturate the serotonin receptors in the brain. The endorphin levels will gradually decrease over the next 30 days following treatment. This eliminates the rapidly fluctuating levels of serotonin and alleviates the physical stresses of the nicotine addiction ( stops the physical nicotine cravings).
The therapist will apply infrared laser light to specific acupuncture or energy points located on the ears, wrists, hands, legs, and feet with a laser probe. We call this Acu-Laser.
Your Acu-Laser treatment has a calming, relaxing effect on the body and some clients report a feeling of euphoria following a treatment. A typical session takes between 45 and 60 minutes.
The therapist will educate and council you on how to beat the psychological issues. We will discuss the difference between physical and psychological cravings, how to break the habit, and offer advice on detoxification and supplements in order to succeed as a non-smoker.
How many treatments will I need?
Most people find that one Acu-Laser treatment is all it takes for them to remain smoke free. Depending on individual mental stress levels, some people feel the need to have a second treatment, which is offered at a reduced rate.
For those with ongoing stress concerns we recommend a stress management program of massage and/or laser therapy geared to the individual.
